AXIOMS #7: IS COCA COLA GREEN?

JUNE 15, 2015/BARRY COLONNA

As promised in my last discloser, we are continuing with part seven of Axioms. This one in particular was asked by an acquaintance of mine and I took the liberty of writing about it here because it is fitting for this section. I have an obligation to share useless trivia with you here, despite the fact that I have most likely trivia-ed you to death already. If you are tired of trivia, you may stop reading this at any time.

Discloser: Please do not stop reading! The opinions of Barry do not reflect the opinions of Axioms with Barry or any of its subsidiaries (i.e.: Barry).

The question I was asked was, “Is the actual color of Coca Cola green without the caramel color?”

Many people are 100% positive that coke is green in color without the caramel coloring. It has become quite a strong urban legend. But is it true? Many urban legends are based on some fact, after all. It was actually surprisingly difficult to find legitimate information, rather than rumors and replies from random people on the internet.

Without further ado, here is the answer to the question. Since its inception in 1886, Coca Cola has always been brown in color. The caramel coloring was originally added to create the rich brown color and to hide impurities from the copper kettles it was initially made in, and brown hides impurities remarkably well. But what color would it be without the added coloring? It would be clear! Crazy, huh? Okay, maybe not that crazy, but still. So that’s it! Coca Cola has never been and is not green in any way. Hope that helps!

Discloser: Coca Cola may become green if one was to add green food coloring. This discloser is directed at any smart-alecks who want to dispute my claim that Coca Cola is never green.

Discloser #2: These disclosers may or may not stop. I have not yet decided.

Speaking of neon green sodas (if you are concerned about drinks that are that color), I must draw my attention to Mountain Dew. I tried it for the first time a few years ago and I felt as though I was drinking something radioactive or antifreeze for my car. Not the taste of course, as I have never had antifreeze, nor do I intend to, but the color looks as though it is. Kind of scary, if you ask me!

Since we’re talking about Mountain Dew, I might as well clarify another rumor, right? Many people are under the impression that Mountain Dew reduces sperm count in males. This is not true in any way and has never been based in fact. Not that any ladies reading this necessarily have to worry about that (unless you are planning on becoming pregnant and you’re significant other is addicted to Mountain Dew), but apparently it is a very prevalent rumor and I wanted to shed some light on the topic.

In conclusion, I have provided Axioms on three popular sodas. Do I like soda? Yes! Is that why I am focusing on soda trivia? Not really. I just write what the people (i.e.: me) want to hear.
