PROJECT DESCRIPTION

As many digital art designs I have done, almost none of them are the correct dimesions for a computer wallpaper. That surprised me when I decided I wanted to change the wallpaper on my computer. I never really choose the dimesions of the design beforehand; I just start with an image and build around it no matter what odd size it comes out.

That is when I decided I wanted to create a wallpaper. I have the capabilities. I should be able to come up with something pretty awesome, right? Well... I don't know about that. Normally I have a pretty solid idea in mind before I begin a design. For this one, all I knew was that it needed to fit in the dimesions of my monitor. Not a lot to go on.

I wanted something magical and without any people. I recall seeing some really cool traditional artwork of floating cities, so I decided to attempt that with a photo manipulation. The image above is the result. In all honesty, I didn't know what it was going to look like until it was nearly complete.

I used the roof of a pavilion as the base of the city, and built up from there. My idea was that it is a city of fairies or elves floating above a hidden valley (Hidden Valley was originally going to be the name for this project until I remembered the salad dressing). I created a portal that they could travel through to the human world. The Tree of Life and Fountain of Youth hover next to the city. I enhanced the sunset and added sunbeams and encroaching stars to add to the fantasy element. The fountain was actually the most difficult thing to create. I had to add a lot of elements for it to appear realistic.

Anyway, this is what I created. I hope you like it! There are behind the scenes images below documenting the process I took to arrive at the finished design, if you are interested. Cheers!
